Why we need your help

  • The lack of safe housing — Many survivors are forced to remain in abusive relationships due to a shortage of appropriate accommodation.
  • Financial barriers — Economic abuse often leaves survivors without access to money, benefits, or stable employment.
  • Social isolation — Many women spoke of the struggle to rebuild their lives, with no transport, limited social networks, and a fear of stepping back into the community.
  • Emotional recovery — Survivors highlighted the need for trauma-informed support that acknowledges the deep psychological impact of abuse and provides pathways to healing.

    • Our lived experience is backed up by extensive research and statistics, including:

  • Nationally, over 60% of women seeking refuge in 2022-23 were turned away due to lack of capacity (ONS, 2023).
  • Locally, the East Riding & Humber Domestic Abuse Partnership Strategy (2021-2024) confirms that there is insufficient specialist housing to meet demand.
